EDWARD ZANDER NAMED PRESIDENT
OF SUN MICROSYSTEMS, INC.
PALO ALTO, Calif. - April 21, 1999 - Sun Microsystems, Inc.
(NASDAQ:SUNW) announced today that Edward J. Zander, chief operating officer since January
1998, will hold the additional title of president. Scott McNealy retains the title of
chairman and chief executive officer. This announcement expands Mr. Zander's role at Sun,
where he has held numerous positions since his arrival in 1987.
"Ed has done a tremendous job of managing the daily operations of the company over
the past year, and I feel the time is right to acknowledge his important
contribution," said Scott McNealy. "Sun is racing down the highway with a full
tank of gas and precise directions on where the industry is going. There is no company in
our industry that is better positioned to deliver the right products, services and
technologies to '.com' the world. Ed has been a key leader for Sun and deserves the
recognition for driving the operations of the company to this point."

Mr. Zander is responsible for Sun's seven product divisions, including engineering and
product development, sales, service and marketing. Additionally, Sun's chief technology
officer and corporate brand marketing also report to him. Prior to being named chief
operating officer, Mr. Zander was the president of Sun's multibillion dollar computer
systems business. He has also held numerous other management positions at the company,
including president of Sun's software division and vice president of corporate marketing.
Zander has more than 25 years of experience in the computer industry. Prior to Sun, he
held management positions at Apollo, Data General and Raytheon. He earned a B.S. in
electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, and an MBA
from Boston University. He serves on the Boards of Directors of the Jason Foundation for
Education, Documentum, Inc., Portal Software, Inc., Rhythms Netconnections, Inc., and the
Science Advisory Board of RPI.
