QMS Plans Assault on Business Ink Jet Printer
Market with $1,299 Color Laser Printer
Highlights
The network-ready QMS magicolor(r) 2 DeskLaser is now priced at just
$1,299-clearly the lowest cost color printer on the market.
The QMS magicolor 2 DeskLaser offers complete networking and full color
printing with its standard Ethernet(r) interface and included cyan, magenta, yellow, and
black toner supplies.
Groundbreaking move makes the QMS magicolor 2 DeskLaser an effective
alternative for current users of ink jet technology, while bringing them an outstanding
level of printing performance.
December 14, 1998 - Mobile, AL - QMS, Inc. (NYSE:AQM) today announced it has
lowered the price of its QMS magicolor 2 DeskLaser, offering customers a full-color,
network-ready laser printer for only $1,299. A favored choice among workgroups using
Windows(r) 95 and NT, the QMS magicolor 2 DeskLaser is equipped with everything needed for
brilliant, performance-oriented color printing including a full-color consumables set and
Ethernet network interface. The new price point makes the QMS magicolor 2 DeskLaser a
cost-effective alternative to color ink jet printers.
"In lowering the price on this popular printer, we're able to bring the product to
smaller business sectors that, due to cost constraints, haven't had the opportunity to
utilize the speed and printing advantages of a color laser printer," said Richard
Bowles, vice president of marketing at QMS. "In the past, these companies have had to
contend with the slower, less powerful performance of ink jet technology. With the QMS
magicolor 2 DeskLaser, they don't have to settle for an ink jet printer."
While the price of the QMS magicolor 2 DeskLaser makes QMS a trendsetter in color
printing, equally important is its performance and feature set. For $1,299, the DeskLaser
offers a standard Ethernet network interface and print speeds of 4 pages-per-minute in
full color, and up to 16 ppm in black and white-perfect for supporting all the printing
requirements of the entire workgroup. While some ink jet vendors tout faster print speeds,
the performance of such devices is dramatically reduced when choosing high page coverage
or optimum print quality-selections that print at rated speed on the QMS magicolor 2
DeskLaser.
With 600 x 600 dpi resolution, the QMS magicolor 2 DeskLaser adds brilliant color to a
variety of print media, including plain paper, thick stock, envelopes, and
transparencies-making it easy to print color business documents on demand. Laser printed
pages are characterized by their durability, withstanding frequent handling and rough
conditions. In contrast, ink jet output is subject to smearing and fading, and often
requires drying time before handling.
LAN Times magazine, who recently awarded the QMS magicolor 2 DeskLaser with its
"Best of LAN Times award", recognized the QMS magicolor 2 DeskLaser not only for
its networking capabilities and ease of use features, but for its impressive image
quality. When referring to print speed and resolution the magazine stated, "...
there's no competition from any inkjet printer. Not even close.".
The QMS magicolor 2 DeskLaser operates in the Windows environment, using the printing
capabilities already contained in Windows 95/98 and NT to offer a performance workgroup
solution. The DeskLaser can easily be upgraded to a QMS magicolor 2 CX, DX, or EX which
feature QMS Crown(r)-a printer architecture that offers PostScript(tm) and PCL(r) 5c
emulations, network administration tools, and additional network protocols.
