SEAGATE ANNOUNCES DEVELOPMENT EFFORT FOR SUN MICROSYSTEMS
STOREX STORAGE MANAGEMENT PLATFORM
StoreX support planned for future storage products
SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. -- December 14, 1998 - Seagate Technology, Inc.
(NYSE:SEG) today announced support for Sun Microsystems StoreX storage management
platform, a Java-based open architecture designed to bring greater manageability to
devices in distributed, networked storage environments. Seagates Storage Networking
team plans to develop StoreX support in future products as part of its pioneering work to
develop comprehensive, new intelligence features residing at the storage device level.
Such new intelligence features will provide functionality which will enable optimized
enterprise system performance, automated enterprise IT tasks, and enhanced information
availability and usability.
Seagates efforts in developing storage devices for distributed Storage
Networks dates back to the early 1990s, said Nigel Macleod, Seagates
vice president of Advanced Concepts. Our vision to deliver greater storage device
functionality and performance for enterprise applications is evidenced by the
companys pioneering activities in transforming Fibre Channel from a purely network
interconnect to a high performance storage system architecture. At the product level,
Seagate developed the industrys first native Fibre Channel disc drive to enter
volume production and the company is committed to maintaining its leadership role through
research into even more enhanced storage device capabilities. Some of these include
object-oriented discs (OOD), direct device-to-device communication, and embedded storage
management functionality. StoreX is a natural complement to these objectives and is a key
enabling technology for distributed Storage Networking environments.
"We welcome such strong development support for Project StoreX from Seagate, a
leader in the storage industry," said Jeff Allen, vice president of marketing for
Sun's Network Storage. "Seagate's commitment to StoreX combined with Sun's three-year
head start on alternative approaches will ensure that customers gain access to open
applications that reduce the cost and complexity of storage management in the very near
future."
The technologies being created by Seagates Storage Networking team can be
leveraged across multiple classes of storage devices, including disc and tape drives. In
order to fully utilize future new embedded hardware capabilities, development efforts also
focus on close relationships with key software developers. Seagate Fibre Channel disc
drives are the industrys first to ship in volume with Public Loop Support, a key
enabling technology for Storage Networking. The company is also actively working to
implement multi-gigabit Fibre Channel capability.
